It just seemed odd

So today I had an eye doctor’s appointment. Apparently I have totally awesome vision while I’m wearing my glasses. The lady was actually joking when she put up the line of the smallest letters she had. That’s what it looked like, too… a line with some bumps on it. I took a shot anyway, and it turns out I got all the letters correct, so I have 20/10 vision (better than normal). It seems a little odd that the ability to infer letters rather than read them should get me that rating, but it was fun to get her reaction. She had actually moved on when I read them and she stopped dead in her tracks and laughed a little when she said, “are you serious?!” while leaning into the monitor to check the letters herself. She had to go back and retype the rating she had already given me.

Guess those carrots I was eating last night did their thing.

So, on the way from the doctor to a meeting I stopped at McDonald’s for a quick bite of crappy comfort food. I don’t think it’s a big surprise that McDonald’s has some pretty unhealthy choices. The real problem is that it tastes so stinking good. So while I’m waiting for my greasy cheeseburger, salt-laden fries, and sugar-bomb milkshake, the next customer comes up to order. She’s a college kid, probably a sophomore or junior. She’s talking on her cell phone to someone apparently named “Dude” and complaining loudly about food. No, not the food at McDonald’s… the food in the cafeteria at her college (coincidentally, the same college I attended).

I was very successful in stifling my chortles. She was standing in McDonald’s complaining about a place that serves food that is guaranteed to be way healthier than what she’s about to put in her mouth. I thought that was odd… and a bit ironic that in trying to find a “better” option, she ends up at McDonald’s. There’s just something wrong with that.

Plus, I think she’s wrong about that cafeteria. I ate there for 4.5 years. Don’t get me wrong… it’s no gourmet spread. It’s institutional food, but it wasn’t bad. I can understand wanting an alternative from time to time, but I certainly managed to enjoy it while I was there.

In fairness to her, though, it’s likely they have a new cook after almost 20 years.

Wow… 20 years… that seems odd too.
